Literature Text

Of all emotions known, the most unpleasant is fear,
The one that makes hearts race when evil is near.
It is most likely to strike you when you're alone
It may be a creepy voice when you answer the phone
It may come from outside, a shout or a scream
It might just be a terrible dream
It make be a sound, such as a tree on a pane
It may feel icy, or consume you in flame
Should you become scared, with reason to fright,
I'll take your hand, and show you the light.
This one is ancient. My guestimate based on my lame word choice of "creepy" puts this probably somewhere in middle school. I submitted this to a poetry contest and got a response telling me that I was "one of 33 poets whose artistry will be recorded professionally as a special part of a new CD poetry collection." Of course, they offer me the 3 CD set for only $49.00 plus $8.00 shipping. What a deal! No thanks. It was at this point that I realized these poetry contests are probably definitely a scam. Oh! You managed to put some words together. Let us take your work for free, forbid you from ever publishing your own work independently, write a letter that makes you feel good about yourself, and then proceed to sell your own work to you in book/audio format! Needless to say, I rejected the offer...

Aside from this, I look back and appreciate the fact that even in middle school, I recognized the difference between "your" and "you're." Then I weep about the fact that so many people my age use the two interchangeably. I weep harder when I see these words used incorrectly in comments my mom's teacher-friends send her on Facebook. These people are teaching our children. *headdesk*
